Advisory Board Meeting
April 24, 2017

 

The meeting was called to order at 9:34 am by President Annette Hammond.

Everyone welcomed Vanessa Rodriquez who will be attending the Board meetings now that Laurna has gone.

 

Present:  Kent Clancy, Cindy Mohler, Linda Ausplund, Bob Mohler, Barbara Bacon, Fred Rentschler, Don Sipes, Rolando Salazar, Wayne Slater, Annette Hammond, Jeanne Wolf. Also in attendance were Adriane Lee Bird, Vanessa Rodriquez (staff), and Fred Weston, PROS.

  1. Approval of Agenda – approved

 

Approval of Minutes – Cindy Mohler stated that she was to change the link to add the newsletter not the membership application.

 

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Mohler stated that as of March 31, 2017 there is $254,000 in assets, about $15,000 more than last year on 12-31-16.  The pancake breakfast is showing a larger loss. Perhaps ordering ahead? Vanessa will check into it.

The Friday Social is back in the black as Hillendale now has reimbursed up to date and is set to reimburse monthly.

The expenses for the Bazaar Group were high and this is based on the severance pay to Martha and to the salary of Alexandra.

The regulatory and tax filings are completed and $1275 has been paid.

The Ski Club is showing a $220 deficit. The season is concluded for this year.

  1. Manager/Coordinator Update
  2. Adriane Lee Bird – Cinco de Mayo currently has 53 sign- ups. The posting to replace Laurna will go up May 1st. The bathroom renovations are complete and the cost was covered by CDBG.  The rest of the renovations will be discussed in focus groups, including outdoor spaces. Doors will be ADA The Institute for Health & Aging at UCSF will make a presentation June 6, 2017 on Aging in Contra Costa County. They are looking at what cities can do to address their aging population.  The Walnut Creek Police Department has a program “Project Life Saver” which supplies a transmitter that can be attached to those likely to wander. Cost is $300 initially and $25 thereafter. Adrienne is looking into scholarships for it.  Living Life Well event on May 31, 2017 now has 85 sign-ups. Lunch is $2 from the CC Café. There will be 4 sessions per hour.
  3. Vanessa Rodriquez – Volunteers are needed for the Living Life Well program. A sign up sheet was circulated. There will be booths for WCSC activities but no outside business promotion. Volunteer Appreciation week is coming up and bags and chocolate bars are to be given to each volunteer. May 11 is Senior Rally Day in Sacramento and a free bus will leave from Concord Senior Center.

 

III…. Unfinished Business

  1. Speaker Series – Annette stated that Hillendale is scheduled June 30th. Other plans are perhaps for an attorney to speak, go over new driving laws, transportation alternatives.
  2. WCSC Credit Card – Adrienne has it in the safe. A motion was made by Fred Rentschler to put recurring charges such as Netflix on the card which has been first approved by the Treasurer. Motion was seconded by Linda Asplund and carried.  Also, Adrienne is looking into a Nextdoor account for WCSC.
  3. Membership – per Vanessa quite a few applications came in last month. Annette stated that membership issues will be discussed again in June.
  4. Cinco de Mayo – Barbara Bacon stated that she has put an announcement in the newspaper which should run in 2 weeks.
  5. Christmas Party – Barbara Bacon. This will be held December 7th, Thursday at Boundary Oak. We will use the same contract as last year. There was discussion about charging non-members more but this was not decided upon. City staff will be invited. A motion was made by Fred Rentschler to raise the price to $35 and seconded by Wayne Slater. The motion carrier 7-2.

 

  1. New Business/Reports.
    1. Creaker donation of appreciated stock – Per Bob Mohler most charities accept these donations. He checked with Charles Schwab and there is no cost to open and keep an account. There is a $4.95 charge to sell. The paperwork can be done and set up by Bob and Annette as trustees. A motion was made by Fred Rentschler that authorizes setting up a Charles Schwab account for WCSC so the club can receive stock donations. The Trustees will be the President and the Treasurer. Second by Kent Clancy. Motion carried.
    2. Catherine Netz 100th Birthday Party – June 23rd at the Friday Social per her request. The planning is complete and an interview and article will be in the newsletter. About 20 of her family and friends will attend and the WCSC will pay for their meals. Preston will use the van to pick up her guests needing a ride.
    3. Ambassadors reports –

Creakers – opening days went ok except for some rain.

Public Relations – Cindy is working on a link to post the newsletter.

Investment – Wayne stated they will have a certified financial planner discuss social security benefits. This may be an idea for the Speaker Series. He will let Annette know.

There was some discussion if the drop in fee can or should be raised to $2. Adrienne will look into if we can charge different amounts.

  1. Announcements
    1. Trips – Jody is traveling
    2. PROS – Fred Weston stated he will continue to be the liaison to the WCSC Board. The new chairman is Tom Worthy. They are looking into capital improvement projects for 2018. He will know more after their next meeting in June and will report then.
