Advisory Board Minutes for July 17, 2017

October 18, 2017

Walnut Creek Seniors Club
Advisory Board Meeting
July 17, 2017

The meeting was called to order at 9:33 am by President Annette Hammond.

Present: Cindy Mohler, Bob Mohler, Barbara Bacon, Jody Johnson, Fred Rentschler, Rolando Salazar Annette Hammond, Jeanne Wolf. Also in attendance were Adriane Lee Bird and Vanessa Rodriquez (staff), and Fred Weston, PROS.

Prior to the start of the agenda, the Board heard from Marcia Liberson and her husband Herbert Saloman concerning an issue at the Senior Tennis Group activity which is Monday Wednesday Friday at Larkey Park tennis courts. This is the second time they have come to the Board regarding the unacceptable behavior of one player. After the last time Adriane drafted a good behavior policy for the group to sign. Apparently all players signed. However, per Ms Liberson, the one player’s behavior continues. Two others have complained and Preston has been out to meet with the player, however he wasn’t there. Going forward Preston will talk to the player and the two other complainants, Fred will visit the group as a representative of the Board and Adriane will discuss with the City attorney.

  1. Approval of Agenda – approved

Approval of Minutes – Approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Bob Mohler reports that the assets as of June 30, 2017 are $241,625.  This is about $18,722 than was in the account last year at this time. Bob states that if this pace continues there will be about a $20,000 deficit by the end of the year. There were 36 new members paid in June. The Friday Social is breaking even with the contribution of Hillendale. The Bazaar Group continues to spend more than it brings in by quite a bit. There was some discussion of the rate the assets are being spent down. Annette will put this as a topic of discussion at the next meeting.

**Note on Agenda – Patsy Barich of the Walnut Creek Village spoke to the Board about a possible joint speaker event on Personal Safety. Speakers would include a policeman, a psychologist and a cane master (for defense). The Village would pay the expenses. Adriane will look into possible free rental with the City. The vote on this is being held over until next month.

  1. Manager/Coordinator Update

  1. Adriane Lee Bird – Adriane has observed that the ongoing drop in activities need succession planning for leadership (such as tennis, bingo, Friday social kitchen, movies.) There would need to be training by the current leader.

Adriane and Vanessa went to Los Angeles and visited 4 senior centers and shared information. Those centers seemed to have the same issue with membership declining. Some centers had a fitness center and Adriane could look into an outdoor fitness area. She may have a grant to work with. The renovation of the building the senior center is currently in is set for Spring 2018 and suggestions and requests will be heard.

A new activity is scheduled – Thursday Theater with the Vagabond  Players.

Vanessa stated that the parking lot construction is almost done and the lighting in front of the building. Also, August 3rd there will be a Paint and Wine night. She will do an email about it and Barbara will put an announcement in the paper.

Starting August 14 registrations for classes will be able to be done online.

  • Unfinished Business
    1. Bingo Machine – Adriane has checked and it is working. It seems the bingo players are resistant. Preston will do training in August and help with the groups learning curve – they like the chip board cards better.
    2. Friday Social – Discussion of changing the time. A motion was made by Fred to move the time to noon (service of lunch). It was seconded by Jody and the vote was unanimous.
    3. Speaker Series – Barbara noticed a speaker at Rossmoor on the topic of legalized marijuana and the Board agreed she should look into it further for a possible speaker.
    4. Ice Cream Social – This was successful. There were about 70 attendees and 18 walk-ins. It was suggested that we should hand out our brochures with information on the Walnut Creek Senior Club at the next Ice Cream Social.
    5. Audit – Wayne will be doing the annual audit next month.

  1. New Business
    1. Anniversary Party – The Club will be 65 years old this year. It was decided to have a Wine and Cheese Party in October. It would be free for members (Jody, Fred, Barbara volunteered to work on it). There was a suggestion that there be a charge of $15 and that would be a membership for 2018 also – as a way to get new members and make it convenient for continuing members.
    2. Ambassadors Reports – Fred reported that the Creakers got the new AED that replaced the one stolen (insurance paid). Cindy noted that the hits on our blog are down.

  1. Announcements
    1. Trips – Jody stated that there is a trip to Villa Ca’toga in Calistoga and lunch in St Helena coming up.
    2. PROS – Fred stated that there was nothing new to report. They will be working on the Civic Park master plan in the next year and he will represent the WCSC.

Meeting adjourned at 11:20 am

Respectfully,

Jeanne Wolf

Secretary
